Low-Cost Lighting Options

While it is entirely possible to spend thousands of dollars on video lighting kits, you can do quite well on a low budget -- e.g., the kind of budget home video producers are often working with. Work lights, available at hardware stores, are particularly useful.

This two-lamp halogen lamp comes with two separately switchable lights that total 1000 watts. The tripod is at a useful height. The lamp casings give you a surface that can use to clamp on filtering materials to soften the light. This kind of light can often be found for under $40. A similar lamp with one 500-watt light and a low floor stand can be found for under $20. The two in combination can often be used for the key light and fill light.
At under $10, you might be able to afford several of these traditional work lamps, which can be clamped on any convenient surface. Again, you can clothespin materials in front of the light to soften it (taking care, of course, to not use flammable materials.)
